Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO & The Fourth Musketeer

from Photofocus, 10/29/2009

"

We hear a great deal about shutter speed, aperture and ISO, but there’s another control we need to remember and often don’t. That’s the white balance. For those of you shooting video on a DSLR it’s particularly important. Video folks spend much more time worrying about color balance than still photographers. One of the reasons is that changing color in post is more complicated in video than in still photography.

In my opinion, everyone should pay attention to white balance no matter what they shoot. It saves time in post and therefore is a good thing.

"I'm a professional wildlife photographer and the host/producer of a TV show called "Wild Photo Adventures" and we have four of your Expodiscs that we use religiously. ExpoDiscs for Video and Hybrid Video/Still Applications

"Out on the beach, I didn’t have anything to white balance off of and would have simply shot on auto white, but I had the ExpoDisc and it was extremely quick and easy to use — so I balanced from that. I was very happy with the results and have found myself turning to the ExpoDisc time and time again — perhaps because it’s so quick and easy."

The patent pending ExpoDisc Digital White Balance Filter provides a fast and easy custom white balance solution for videographers, and turns what has been a difficult color management problem into a simple routine.  Use an ExpoDisc Neutral, an ExpoDisc Portrait or an ExpoDisc Video Format Filter to set your custom white balance on either a dedicated video camera or a video/still hybrid DSLR.

Simply read and set white balance with the ExpoDisc in place to consolidate several on location and post processing steps into one quick and easy custom white balance procedure. Get the same consistent, accurate color without the need to worry about the accuracy of the camera's own auto white balance (AWB), or fumble with cumbersome cards and targets.

Each ExpoDisc is manufactured and individually tested and calibrated to fall within strict tolerances of light transmission and color neutrality. Consisting of multiple layers of carefully selected materials, the ExpoDisc is guaranteed to be within +/- 2% of neutral for demanding professionals.

Here is how the ExpoDisc works:

Varying levels of colorcast typically occur in digital image capture and require compensation as part of the process to create video with good color fidelity. Blue, green, red and yellow colorcasts are not uncommon. And, editing video to remove these color-casts is time-consuming. Until now, videographers have had to rely on gray/white cards and targets to solve this problem.

The sophisticated design enables the ExpoDisc to receive, scramble and passively transmit mixed light from a wide angle in front of the disc through to the image sensor for a more accurate and efficient white balance correction.  Simply take a white balance reading with the ExpoDisc installed, and your video camera or still/video hybrid will compensate for and neutralize the colorcast it sees through the ExpoDisc.

ExpoDisc filters are available with quick pressure release mounts in standard sizes, including 52mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm, 95mm, as well as 4x5.65 flats. Prices range from $69.95 to $169.95.
